Pulmonary Rehab Program

Pulmonary Rehab is for patients who have lung disease but they want to take charge of it, get stronger, and live a better quality of life. We focus on building strength and endurance, as well as educating the patient about the disease process and many other education topics.

Conditions that are appropriate for Pulmonary Rehab:

COPD
Asthma
Emphysema
Chronic Bronchitis
Pulmonary Fibrosis
Lung Transplant/ Resection
Lung Cancer
Occupational/ Environmental Lung Diseases

Goals of Pulmonary rehab include:

Controlling the symptoms and complications of breathing problems.
Increasing the level of independence and physical activity a patient enjoys.
Reducing the need for hospitalization.

Expected Outcomes:

Increased physical conditioning
Improved quality of life
Increased stamina and endurance
Reduce hospital re-admissions
Reduced length of stay if hospitalized
Reduced medication costs
Learn more about lung disease and how to manage it more efficiently

Qualifying for Pulmonary Rehab Services:
Admission to Jackson County Hospital's Outpatient Pulmonary Rehab services requires a referral from a physician. The Respiratory Therapist will consult with your physician and send progress reports on a regular basis. Most insurances pay for Pulmonary Rehab services & we can also help the uninsured.

Timeframe of program/ visits:
Most patients complete treatment within 10-15 weeks, with 2-3 appointments per week. This will be worked out and agreed upon between the patient and Respiratory Therapist. Upon discharge from the Pulmonary Rehab program at JCHD, the patient will be encouraged to join the maintenance program at the JCHD wellness center. This will help the patient to keep up the benefits gained from the program on their own. Once discharged the patient will have the option to participate in the maintenance for 1 year at no cost.

Please call Christy Crisp at the JCHD Outpatient Pulmonary Rehab Program at 361-782-7800 X 615 with any questions or more details about the program.
