Jackson Healthcare Center’s Swing Bed
Program Explained
When
it comes to hospital care, are you familiar with the term “Swing Bed”?
Some hospitals offer swing bed programs, while others don’t.
We will explain the term “swing bed” and the advantages of a swing
bed program.
A
Swing Bed program allows your physician to “swing” your level of care from
acute medical care to skilled rehabilitation.
This can be advantageous to you, the patient, in insuring you receive the
maximum health plan benefits while receiving the level of care needed to fully
recover.
Jackson
Healthcare Center’s Swing Bed Program is designed to meet your individual
rehabilitation needs, enabling you to return to home and/or work as soon as
possible. If you are admitted to
Jackson County Hospital for acute care, you can transfer to the rehabilitation
phase of treatment without ever leaving your hospital bed. In addition, you may receive acute care at some other
hospital, and still have the choice of transferring to Jackson Healthcare Center
as a swing bed patient. This allows
you to be close to home, family and friends during your rehabilitation, which
can help speed your recovery.
What
can you expect at Jackson Healthcare Center if you are a swing bed patient?
Jackson Healthcare Center offers a full range of services. The hospital offers compassionate care, providing support and
comfort to patients and their families.
Therapies
while in the Swing Bed program include: rehabilitation
for patients who have had a stroke, surgery, hip or knee replacement; IV
medication therapy; and strength training after a lingering illness or prolonged
hospitalization. Our physical therapist will work to restore independence, and
provide education and training to accomplish tasks to avoid pain and fatigue.
The physical therapist will also assess your need for assistance devices.
Our respiratory therapist teaches breathing techniques and exercises to promote
optimal breathing. Our speech therapist assists patients with interpreting and
remembering written and spoken statements; expressing thoughts through speaking,
writing and facial expressions and promote safe swallowing.
Nursing
care in the Swing Bed program provides support, care, and patient/family
education during your recovery. And
our clinical dietician offers nutritional support and education.
You may remain in the program for as long as
you have skilled therapeutic goals to obtain.
When your goals have been met you are discharged from the program.
The
Swing Bed program is often covered by Medicare and Medicaid, as well as many
private insurance plans. If you
have questions about insurance coverage, Jackson Healthcare Center has a social
worker available to assist you. The
social worker will also assist with discharge planning, personal resources and
financial needs.
