Yes, you can have an MRI Performed at Jackson Healthcare Center First of all, your doctor will make the decision and arrange for your MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) examination at Jackson Healthcare Center with the most advanced diagnostic imaging instrument available today.
MRI is a medical technology that allows your doctor to “see” soft
tissue, muscles, fat, and internal organs with the use of x-rays, making it safe
and a comprehensive diagnostic exam. It
uses a powerful magnet to align the hydrogen atoms of your body along its
magnetic field. Series of radio frequency waves are introduced while you, the
patient, are inside the magnet. The
radio frequency waves prompt the hydrogen atoms in your body to give off signals
which are then processed by a powerful computer into images of your body’s
internal anatomy. It is capable of
producing images of the body’s internal anatomy in great detail.
Additionally, because the system is considered “non-invasive”, it
offers considerably fewer risks than some diagnostic alternatives and does NOT
expose you to any ionizing radiation. Can
Everyone Have This Study?
MRI is suitable for almost all patients.
There are, however, a few exceptions because of the strength of the
magnetic field. These include: § Patients with cardiac pacemakers §
Patients
with cerebral aneurysm clips §
Patients
with metal fragments or splinters in their eyes You also will be asked in more detail at the time of your study whether you have a prosthetic heart valve, a prosthetic joint or details of any other previous surgical procedure. Special precautions are also taken for any patient with occupational exposure to metal fragments such as metal workers. How
Should You Prepare for the Exam?
On the day of your exam you may (unless told otherwise) eat normally and
take any prescribed medications. When
you arrive at the Jackson Healthcare Center, you will be greeted by the staff
who will ask you questions about your medical history. You will be requested to remove anything that might be affected by the strong magnetic field. Such items would include: your watch, credit cards, coins, keys, bobby pins, and jewelry. (Please try to leave these items at home if possible.) You may be asked to wear a hospital gown. Contact us at adm@jchd.org if you have additional questions.
